Lean Six Sigma Training and Certification

White Belt

A White Belt is an entry level to the tools and methodology.  Introduction of the terms, the DMAIC phases, and overall approach as it relates to the company culture and continuous improvement.  Typically, executives and leadership of an organization that is heading or supporting the effort of the other belts as they strive for operational excellence and the resilience of continuous improvement.

Yellow Belt

A Yellow Belt learns not only the DMAIC methodology but the basic and common continuous improvement tools and analysis.  A Yellow Belt’s role within the organization is to be inherently aware of day-to-day continuous improvement opportunities with the processes that they operate, to support as a team member on large LSS or continuous improvement projects or Kaizen events.

Green Belt

A Green Belt is someone who has been trained in using the fundamental and the descriptive statistical Lean Six Sigma tools and methodologies to improve processes and reduce waste, leading to higher quality and efficiency.  A Green Belt’s role within the organization is to support larger LSS or continuous improvement projects or efforts, support with data collection and basic statistical analysis and visualization of the data.  In addition to supporting Black Belts and Master Black Belts, they have the skill set and knowledge to complete smaller projects while overseeing a team of Yellow Belts.

Black Belt

A Black Belt is someone who has been trained using the fundamental tools as well as both the basic and inferential statistical tools for problem solving, design of experiments and continuous improvement.  A Black Belt’s role within an organization is to support and/or lead large continuous improvement or LSS projects (or Kaizen events).  They are skilled in deriving insight from data and managing a project both at a strategic level as well as a tactical level.

Why the Martial Arts Lingo

Similar to martial arts like karate, Lean Six Sigma uses "belt" designations to represent different levels of training and expertise.  The different belts for LSS include White, Yellow, Green, Black, and Master Black Belt; each progressing in the number of hours of training, level of distinct skill set regarding analytical problem-solving tools, and the area or level of responsibility in regard to expectations of continuous improvement and practical application of the tools and analysis.
